After tweaking the Aspire One at home I needed to get something to use it on the go. Previously I have been using my old Nokia phone and JoikuSpot to create a mobile WiFi-hotspot. Unfortunately the Aspire One refuses to work with it, no matter what. I changed the JoikuSpot preferences so it uses pre-defined channels for communicatin but still no luck.

huaweie220pic.jpgSo I had to seek other alternatives - I already have a Huawei E220 which I have been using with my MacBook Pro with great success ;) Plugged that in and.. nothing happened.

After some Googling I found instructions to get things up and running - below are the steps I used to get things up and running:

  1. Get the updates first - my old distro did not recognize Huawei
  2. Go to https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=12&release_id=%2026
  3. Get the latest driver (vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-2.0.beta3-ALL-i386-installer.run)
  4. Open terminal (ALT+F2) and type ‘terminal’
  5. Change directory to Download
  6. Install driver by typing
    sudo -sf vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-2.0.beta3-ALL-i386-installer.run
  7. When installer prompts for valid users type
    root user
  8. Restart computer and plug in the HDSPA modem
  9. Start the program (ALT+F2 -> vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux)
  10. Presto.

These did work for me, good luck!

 UPDATE:
One reader just confirmed a successful install of Huawei E169.
